Sports collectibles as a pastime
To have a desire and a passion. These are the essentials on becoming a hobbyist. When we are younger we play most of the time and as we grow older we sometime try and convince ourselves that we can still do the same thing 20 years later. That's until our body says sorry, no can do. Sure we can not do it anymore but that doesn't mean that we don't have the passion for it anymore. So, if we cannot enjoy our passion as much as we used to, what could be the next best thing to replace it? Well in the case of sports, we collect souvenirs of course.
Unless you are a billionaire chances are you will not get a chance to get your hands on a mint rookie card of the great Rocket Richard or a Mickey Mantle baseball card. That's just not in the cards. The fact is that it doesn't matter if what you collect are worth half a penny or thousands of dollars. It's your passion and no one could offer you enough to buy it from you. For example today's little league baseball teams hire a photograph and turn those pictures into baseball cards. THESE ARE PRICELESS. There are also many other objects that can be collected.
Maybe it's because there are more of them printed or done but cards is beyond a doubt, the most popular object collected in the major sports. If this interests you, look in your 'treasure chest' or in the box your grandfather passed on to you that you promised you would. Who knows, maybe you will find an autographed football or baseball. Maybe, it will be a 1912 hockey card. The possibilities are endless.
Well in order to start a collection then you need items. If you intend on buying items that are used, then you would want to buy something to clean it. If card is what you decide to collect, then they sell plastic sheets to protect them. If something like a helmet or a jersey, then you go do a shelf on the wall or a case to show it off to anyone. Also since this is almost an investment, protect it. If you keep it in good condition, your kids might love you even more thirty years from now.
People often wonder, what is the best objects to collect and what era should they concentrate on. Well if you decide to go for objects that are older, then you will need more time to collect what you desire as they are becoming scarcer and they will cost much more. If you want modern era objects like miniature cars or a baseball or a hockey card, you can go ahead and knock yourself out. Whether you decide to concentrate your efforts on one player or one sport is up to you. Just keep in mind that the value of your cards or objects won't be worth as much.
To still relieve the passion after all these years and to do it without the risk of injuring yourself is even a better idea. This is definitely what can happen if you decide to take up sports collectibles. You will also notice that the more you buy, the more you want to buy, so be careful not to spend too much.
